About

Founded in 1958, Glosten is a full-service marine consulting firm comprised of naval architects and marine engineers. We offer a wide range of services to support the design, construction, maintenance, and conversion of research vessels, ferries, tugs, barges, and other commercial vessels. Our portfolio also includes one-of-a-kind marine structures, electrification and hybridization projects for new and existing vessels, and complex systems, including floating wind turbine foundations, wave energy converters, and floating bridges.

With our exposure to the European wind industry and experience designing and overseeing the construction of special-purpose vessels, Glosten is uniquely positioned to support offshore wind projects. We offer valuable expertise during project development through our design and consulting services that improve the entire project workflow—from site selection and economic modeling through the design, installation, operation, and decommissioning phases.

Our offshore wind capabilities include:

  • Special-purpose marine construction vessel design
  • Site selection
  • Site characteristic analysis of climatology and underwater radiated noise
  • Dynamic system modeling
  • Mooring analysis & design
  • Marine operability analysis in given metocean conditions
  • Marine operations planning
  • Float-over analysis for substation installation
  • LCOE modeling
  • Load-out analyses and sea-fastening design for piles and jackets
  • Barge tow plans
  • Installation planning
  • Vessel maneuvering in restricted waterways

Previous Experience

We consulted on several early offshore wind ventures in the United States, including Bluewater, Cape Wind, and Block Island, and have ongoing contracts for underwater noise control at wind lease sites nationwide. In addition, we developed the PelaStar tension-leg platform technology—the leading TLP solution for the new generation of deepwater wind turbine foundations. This technology is currently being paired with the largest class of GE turbines, the Haliade-X, to significantly reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy and loads on the floating system, which would enable a 35% reduction in size. The new design will support the installation of larger turbines in depths of 60 meters or more, dramatically expanding site potential for offshore wind farms.
